Trojans victorious over Homestead

by Bonnie Cheung

The MHS Varsity Football team was victorious during the Homecoming game against the Homestead Mustangs on October 8, winning with a score of 9-3. The win raised the Trojans to a league record of 3-1-1.

The game started off slowly, with both sides at a standstill for the first quarter. Nonetheless, the Trojans pushed ahead and scored, putting the score to 9-0 at halftime. The Mustangs failed to measure up to the Trojans, scoring a measly three points in the second half.

Coach Kelly King has high hopes for this year’s team. King wants to bring his team to the Santa Clara Athletic League (SCVAL) Finals, King said. “I’m really confident. They can do anything they put their minds to.”

Even though the season started well, King still urges the team to make improvements. “One thing [we want to improve on] is fundamentals,” King said. “The second thing is lamenting our mistakes.”

“We didn’t do too well in the red zone and we had some turnovers,” King said commenting on the game’s slow start. “It was how the game played out. But we played defense well and secured our victory.”

Junior Sammy Fanua, who plays tailback, was essential in securing the Trojans’ victory, scoring the game’s only touchdown and boosting his team ahead by 6 points.
“I played my game,” Fanua said. “I think we did decent, but we could’ve done better.”
This year, the team is relatively young, according to Senior Trevor Dimich, as some of the players graduated last year. “We have to start putting all the pieces together. Our team is continuing to grow.”

King also commented on the team’s growth. “We still have a lot of good players left,” King said, “Each year is different.”

Junior Estevan Rodrigez is a new addition to the Varsity team. “I’d say this team has a lot of skill and potential,” Rodrigez said, “I believe our team can achieve the section title if we put our hearts into it.”
