Girls' Volleyball "struggling early on"

by Neha Pearce

The MHS Varsity Volleyball team has started out the season with four wins and eleven losses, according to Head Coach Jeffrey Lamb. The team’s record is 2-2 in the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League (SCVAL).

The lady Trojans lost their first few games to Silver Creek High School, Live Oak High School, and American High School, with records of 3-1, 3-0, and 3-1 respectively. On the other hand, the team won against Leigh High School, Cupertino High School, and Santa Clara High School, with records of 3-1, 3-2, and 3-0, respectively. They had a record of 1-4 at the Spikefest I Varsity Tournament.
Coach Lamb does not have personal goals for the team other than to get them to play at their full potential, a goal he says they are moving closer to.

“They have a tendency to get down when things aren’t going so well,” Lamb said. “They just have to learn to play more consistently.”

This year there are two third-year Varsity players, six second-year Varsity players, and seven first- year Varsity players. Just like every year, it takes time to stabilize the team’s new dynamics and create a balance between new and returning players.

“We are very inexperienced in some key positions,” Lamb said. “So we’re struggling early on.”

There is an outside chance of going to playoffs, but at this point, the team would like to finish top in the league and improve their record. In comparison with last year, the team has started to play closer to their potential, according to Junior Stefani Pati.

“It’s better than last year in most ways,” Pati said. “There was lots of attitude on the team last year and the people from last year have stepped up.”

The lady Trojans defeated Wilcox High School with a score of 3-1. The team will be playing a home game on Thursday, October 14, against Gunn High School with the first serve at 6:45 PM for Varsity.
